How to Get Rid of Acne: 8 Simple Home Remedies for Pimples

Acne is a skin disease caused by clogged hair follicles with sebum and dead skin cells. It causes whiteheads, blackheads and acne. Acne can affect people of all ages, but it is most common in teens. Although there are effective acne treatments, acne can be stubborn.

1. Moisturize with aloe vera

Aloe vera is a tropical plant with leaves that produce a clear gel. When applied to the skin, aloe vera gel has been shown to help fight bacteria, reduce inflammation, and promote wound healing. As such, it is a popular treatment for a variety of skin conditions, including psoriasis, rashes, ulcers, and burns. Limited studies have been done on aloe vera's ability to fight acne in particular, but current research is promising. Aloe vera contains lupeol, salicylic acid, urea nitrogen, cinnamic acid, phenols, and sulfur, all of which inhibit bacteria that can cause acne. In one study, different concentrations of aloe vera gel were added to clove basil oil and tested for anti-acne properties. The higher the concentration of aloe vera in the lotion, the more effective it is in reducing acne. Another study found that using 50% aloe vera gel with tretinoin cream was more effective in treating acne than tretinoin cream alone. Tretinoin cream is an acne treatment derived from vitamin A. Although aloe vera gel alone is not effective in treating acne, it enhances the anti-acne effect of clove basil oil and tretinoin cream. While aloe vera gel can help heal acne on its own, it may be more effective when combined with other medications or remedies.

2. Apply green tea to the skin

Many people drink green tea for its health benefits, but it can also help when applied directly to the skin. Green tea contains flavonoids and tannins, which are known to help fight inflammation and bacteria that can cause acne. It's also high in the antioxidant epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), which has been shown to fight inflammation, reduce sebum production, and inhibit the growth of P. acnes in people with sensitive skin. Numerous studies have shown that people with acne experience less sebum production and acne when they apply 2-3% green tea extract to their skin. There are some skin care products on the market that contain green tea, but it is very simple and cost effective to make your own blend at home.

3. Apply crushed aspirin paste on the pimple

Aspirin contains salicylic acid, which is particularly effective at removing excess oil and dead skin. Prepare one or two aspirin tablets and mix with a few drops of water to make a paste. Then apply the paste directly on the scalp. This should reduce inflammation and redness and also make the acne less painful. Leave the paste on for 10 to 15 minutes and then rinse well with warm water.

4. Use and over-the-counter treatment of acne spots

When picking a product off the shelf, you can find options by looking for two basic ingredients found in many over-the-counter acne medications. One of them is the aforementioned salicylic acid. Another important ingredient to look for is benzoyl peroxide. In addition to reducing oiliness and removing dead skin cells, benzoyl peroxide can also help kill acne-causing bacteria. Although these two ingredients are safe and work in a similar way, which product you choose and how often you use it depends on your own unique skin factors.

And a warning: Salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide have a drying effect. Using too much of these products or using them in combination with certain other products may irritate the skin1. Products containing 0.5 to 2% salicylic acid are recommended. Additionally, sun exposure should be limited when using benzoyl peroxide. This also means a solarium. When trying a new product, take it slow and don't use more than necessary.

5. Put ice on the pimple:

The first step to soothing an angry, painful rash is to apply ice. Cover some ice with a cloth and apply it to the affected area for 3 to 4 minutes. If the ice melts quickly, drop a few cubes into a plastic sandwich bag before placing it on a cloth. Repeat several times throughout the day to soothe skin and reduce inflammation.

6. Application of face mask for acne

There are a lot of face masks on the market these days, and many of them target acne. Again, you can find ingredients like salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide that treat acne directly by opening pores and reducing inflammation. Another ingredient that works similarly is sulfur. Sulfur may resemble match heads, hot springs, and the strong smell of eggs, but it is also used to treat acne, especially milder outbreaks, and is often found in acne. Sulfur is milder than salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide and may be a better choice if you have sensitive skin. When choosing an acne face mask, other important words to look for are “exfoliating” and anti-inflammatory. Depending on your skin type, you can also choose products that "soothe", "hydrate", "soothe" or "detoxify" your skin and have "antioxidant" or "antibacterial" properties. All face masks have different formulas to help balance the drying effects of acne-fighting and skin-soothing ingredients. Many use botanicals such as tea tree oil or green tea, both of which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

7. Get a Cortisone Injection to Quickly Get Rid of a Pimple

For massive, inflamed pimples, over-the-counter treatments may not pack enough punch. In that case, your best shot may be an injection of cortisone directly into the cyst. Performed with a very thin needle, a cortisone injection shrinks the swollen tissue in the pimple, easing  inflammation and allowing the pimple to heal. The dermatologist will perform the procedure quickly and easily, and within 24 hours you will see a visible improvement. In short, we know how depressing acne can be. Fortunately, the immediate solutions we discuss here can help us in the short term. In the long run, keep in mind that "bad skin" is a much more common problem that has only recently been recognized and denigrated on social media by the activity of acne positives2. It's not shameful. Moreover, you don't just have to fight acne. For longer-term acne treatment and information on other acne treatments, visit Phoenix's Top Dermatologist at Saguaro Dermatology.

8. Use makeup with salicylic acid to hide pimples

We don't hide inside just because we have rice. Fortunately, there are many cosmetic products available that can help us safely cover blemishes and fight them at the same time. As with the acne treatments above, there are some keywords to look for when labeling products such as makeup, face powder, and concealers.Acne-prone makeup ingredients: Acne-prone makeup often has similar ingredients found in over-the-counter products; one of the most common of these is salicylic acid. Acne foundations with salicylic acid provide natural coverage for your acne while treating existing acne and preventing new breakouts. Neutrogena, E.L. F. and Clinique are just some of the major brands offering these formulations. Other common ingredients to look for are sulfur, which, like salicylic acid, reduces oiliness and unclogs pores, and hyaluronic acid, which counteracts the drying effect of other ingredients and hydrates the skin. However, as with spot treatments, you need to consider your skin type when choosing a product. If your skin is already dry, you can focus on products that clean your pores and don't dry out your skin. Top Term Anti-Acne Makeup: When choosing makeup to cover acne or to clear up your skin when acne clears up, one feature you should always look for on the label is non-comedogenic. In medical terms, acne is "comedo (plural, comedones)" meaning clogged pores. Products that tend to clog pores, such as certain oils, are "comedogenic" and those that don't clog pores are "non-comedogenic." Fortunately, with so many products to choose from, you're bound to find one that suits your skin. Other search terms are hypoallergenic, which can help sensitive skin, and "clinically tested" for products that are tested by dermatologists before they hit the market.
